Use nail clippers or a small knife to gently scratch or nick the outer shell of the seed. Avoid cutting deep into the seed interior. Immediately drop the nicked seeds into a bowl of water and soak them for 24 hours before planting.
Start treated seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the final spring frost, or direct-sow them outside in early spring or late autumn.
Push seeds 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep into deep starter cells or recycled yogurt containers to give the taproots room to stretch downward.
Cover the seeds completely with soil or vermiculite. Unlike Marguerite daisies, lupine seeds require darkness to break dormancy.
Keep the trays at roughly 18°C to 21°C (64°F to 70°F). Sprouts will push through the soil in 7 to 14 days. Uncover them and put them under bright lights instantly.
