Choose well-draining soil. Avoid heavy clay or mucky areas, which trigger fatal winter root rot.
Keep the soil consistently moist for newly planted coneflowers. Established plants only need watering during extended droughts. Always irrigate at the base to keep foliage dry.
Skip seasonal fertilizers altogether. Over-fertilizing stimulates massive leaf growth but reduces flower production. Top-dress with a thin layer of compost in early spring. Pinch off fading blooms in summer to prolong the flowering season and control self-seeding.
