Direct sowing into their permanent garden home is highly recommended over seed trays.
Plant in early spring (as soon as the soil can be worked) or in late autumn for earlier blooms the following spring.
Sow seeds 1/4 inch (6mm) deep. Unlike Matricaria, Centaurea cyanus seeds require complete darkness to germinate. Cover them fully with soil and press down gently.
Seeds will sprout rapidly within 7 to 10 days if soil temperatures are around 60°F to 70°F (15°C to 21°C).
Plant in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct light daily). Shady spots will cause the stems to become weak and floppy.
They thrive in poor, sandy, or alkaline soils. Avoid highly fertile or heavily composted soil, which triggers excessive leaf growth instead of flowers. Good drainage is essential.
