Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last spring frost, or sow them directly outdoors after all frost danger has passed.
Press seeds 1/8 inch (3 mm) deep into a moist, high-quality seed-starting mix. Cover them very lightly with vermiculite or compost, as they need minimal light to germinate.
Maintain a soil temperature of 18°C to 21°C (64°F to 70°F). Keep the soil evenly damp but not waterlogged.
Green sprouts will pop up rapidly within 7 to 14 days. Move them under bright grow lights immediately.
Transition indoor seedlings outside via hardening off once spring frosts cease. Space individual plants 6 to 12 inches apart, taking care not to disturb the fragile roots.
